Granada and the Alhambra is the most visited tourist site in Spain. The last 2 days we spent wandering its history and culture.
Granada is a key part of Spanish history. Spain was controlled by the Muslim Moors from 700 to 1492 and the Alhambra was their famous fortress. The gardens, flow of water, architecture etc. are phenomenal. In 1492 Granada finally fell to the Christians but the fortress remains to this day. We also walked the gardens of the Moors, the old city streets and modern Granada shops. They still feel more Moorish (Muslim) than Spanish.
We stayed at the Hotel Aurea Washington Irving right at the entrance of the Alhambra. It was a great location for visiting the Alhambra, but a steep walk down to the city center. We walked it once and then took a taxi.
